Unlock the Power of Your Data with User Data Planning
Outline
1 - Data Addition Method
Choose how you want to add your user data before starting your planning process.
You can either upload your data all at once or build it step-by-step manually ✍️ whichever fits your setup best. Every business starts from a different place:
Some already have a long list of user data from previous tools or CRMs.
Others are starting fresh and just need the basics.
By choosing the right method, you’ll make your setup faster and easier.
💬 Think of it like choosing how to pack for a trip - bring your own suitcase (upload) or pack as you go (manual).
What You’ll Do
Option 1️⃣ – Yes, I have a ready file to upload
You can upload your existing User Data Name List file in the Data Name Upload step.
This lets you import all your events, parameters, and attributes in one go, no typing needed. Your file should only include:
The user data names (e.g; View Item List)
Their data types ( number, boolen, string)
Insider will validate everything once it’s uploaded.
Option 2️⃣ – No, I’ll add them manually
You can use Insider’s default user data list — it already includes common events and attributes — and then add your own custom ones later in the Data Requirements step.
This is great if you’re starting small or still defining your use cases.
⚙️ Tips for Success
- Already have a structured list from another system? Upload it.
- Still exploring? Use Insider’s ready list and grow from there.
- You can mix both: start with defaults, then upload later.
What Happens Next
Once you pick your method, next step is determining the Business Objectives. Either the Data Name Upload (for file users) or straight into Data Requirements (for manual planners).
💬 Either way, you’ll end up with a clean, ready-to-use data setup — your way. 🚀
2 - Business Objectives
By selecting one or more business objectives based on your industry and subscribed Insider products. This selection will determine the recommended use cases in the next step.
3. Selecting Use Cases
Choose from default use cases recommended based on your objectives, or create your own. When creating a custom use case, enter a name and description to tailor it to your business needs.
4 - Data Name Upload
Upload your user data list — events, attributes, and parameters — all at once. No more adding things one by one. Just upload a file, and you’re done in seconds!
If you already track data somewhere else (like another platform or your CRM), you don’t have to rebuild everything from scratch. This step helps you bring your existing data into Insider quickly and cleanly.
💬 Think of it like unpacking your moving boxes — you bring everything you already own and place it neatly where it belongs.
What You’ll Do
1.) Get the Sample File
Click Download Sample File — this is your ready-to-fill template.
It already has the correct columns and format, so you don’t have to guess anything.
2.) Add Your Data
Open the file in Excel or Google Sheets and type (or paste) your data. For example:
Keep it clean and short — names like “First Purchase” or “Cart Added” work great! When you’re done, save the file (XLS/XLSX) and upload it.
3.) Review and Confirm
After uploading, Insider will automatically check your file for mistakes. You’ll see your data nicely listed under:
User Events
Event Parameters
User Attributes
If something doesn’t look right, you’ll get a quick error note so you can fix it instantly.
Then, just click Next — and your uploaded data will be ready to use in your use cases.
⚙️ Tips for Success
- Use the sample file — it’s already formatted correctly.
- Keep your file under 5 MB (around 2,500 rows).
- Don’t worry if you forget something — you can always upload another file later.
After your upload match your use cases, your data becomes part of your Insider setup: ready to power your campaigns, automations, and personalizations.
