Outline

Keeping your app users engaged and encouraging them to return is crucial for long-term success. Push notifications are a powerful tool for re-engagement, helping brands deliver timely, relevant messages that drive action.

In this lesson, we’ll explore the 2 main types of push notifications in Insider:

1️⃣ One-Off Push Notifications:  Best for immediate, time-sensitive messages.
2️⃣ Automated Push Notifications: Best for ongoing, behavior-based messaging.

You’ll learn how to set them up in Course 2 and execute campaigns in Course 4.

Example of a single one-off push.

What Are App Push Notifications?

App push notifications are short, actionable messages sent through your app to a user’s device. They help you:

  • Reconnect with inactive users by reminding them to return.
  • Share timely updates about offers, news, or events.
  • Drive conversions by nudging users toward key actions.

One-Off vs. Automated Push Notifications: What’s the Difference?

Now, let's break down each type in detail.

One-Off Push Notifications

One-off push notifications are manually sent messages for time-sensitive campaigns. These are not automated—you decide when to send them.

  • Single Push: Quick alerts and time-sensitive messages. Example: “Flash Sale! 24 hours only – Get 30% off now.”

  • Carousel Push: Showcasing multiple images in a single push. Example: “Discover our new summer collection – Swipe to explore!”

  • Slider Push: Engaging users with a scrolling, interactive format. Example: “New arrivals just dropped! Slide to check them out.”

  • Discovery Push: Highlighting new features, content, or announcements. Example: “🚀 Try our new in-app wallet feature today!”

Automated Push Notifications

Automated push notifications are sent automatically based on user behavior, location, or time-based triggers.

  • Recurring Push:  Regularly scheduled engagement. Example: “It’s time for your weekly deal! Check out our latest offers.”

  • Conversion Push:  Encouraging users to complete a key action. Example: “Still thinking? Your discount expires in 2 hours! Act now.”

  • Geofence Push: Location-based updates or store visits. Example: “You’re near our store! Stop by for an exclusive in-store deal.”

  • Cart Reminder Push: Reducing abandoned checkouts. Example: “Forgot something? Your cart is waiting! Complete your purchase now.”
